Volunteer

Volunteering at GoF is something we think is very valuable. In 2024 we started having volunteers at our farm and we really enjoyed it! The people who joined us were incredibly helpful and left our place with great memories. So, we’re continuing this great initiative and maybe you’re interested too? Below, we share more about what we do and how the volunteering process works.

What do our days look like?

Our mindset is simple: we wake up and see what the day brings. Of course, we have a vision and goals for what we want to achieve in that month, but we don’t plan everything down to each day. Every morning, we assign tasks based on the weather and everyone’s availability.

Everyone here has a fixed responsibility (like milking goats), and throughout the week, there are various flexible tasks to take on. Depending on each person’s skills, we come up with fun things to do, but most of the time we just tackle a group task together! Tasks can vary from gardening and animal care to building projects if you’re handy…

There’s also plenty to do in the kitchen, from preparing meals to preserving and processing vegetables from the garden. We try to bring as much creativity into the work as possible and hope to make it a valuable and educational experience for everyone involved.

Experiences from others

~ Swaan ~

“I didn’t really have any expectations, but since I had been to Ecolonie before, I couldn’t help but compare it at first. However, it turned out to be very different and much freer, so the comparisons quickly faded.”

~ Moritz ~

“I was lucky to get the full GoF experience—helping with construction, goat cuddling and milking, gardening, groundwork, and kitchen work. There was always room for creativity and learning. Despite the hard work, I had plenty of freedom to relax under a tree or explore the area. The boys were lovely, and we formed a lifelong friendship. And of course, Zora, the most enthusiastic dog I’ve ever met!”

FAQ

We aim for a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 volunteers. Sometimes we also have (girl)friends and family coming over to help.

First of all you need to get into the routine and we also like to know you better, so we experienced that 1 week is way too short. After the 3 weeks, we have a week for ourselves to prepare for the next month with new volunteers. We will discuss with you which days are best to travel and make a plan fitting with the other volunteers too.

There are multiple options. We all sleep in our own tiny houses which means the main house is free for volunteers. Upstairs we have a bunkbed and a makeshift room that gives a bit more privacy. The mattresses are comfortable and we have all the beddings here, so you don’t have to bring anything. There’s also the opportunity to sleep in a tent anywhere on the land! We even have tents for you to borrow.

No, you don’t need any experience in gardening and permaculture. Take in consideration that your hands get dirty and some work can be a bit physical. If you have any skills, please share this with us! It’s not only about gardening here.

Sometimes it can rain a lot and if it’s raining there’s mud everywhere! We have a few pairs of wellies to borrow but we need to check the availability on the sizes, so let us know beforehand. A rain jacket is very handy and in general it’s a good idea to bring clothes that can get dirty or warm clothes if its a cold month.
